Is The Kylie Lip Kit Actually Any Good?

Our Editor put it to the test.

“I have to admit, I am kind of amazed by Kylie Jenner. I think the way she’s transformed herself from ‘Kim Kardashian’s little sister’ to a celebrity/entrepreneur in her own right at the ripe age of 18 is pretty damn impressive. That girl has some serious influence in the fashion and beauty industry. I managed to get my hands on a tube of Candy K, and decided to road test it for a day to see if it really is worth the fuss.

Just after application

I applied the lip kit at 9am. The lipliner and the liquid lipstick both applied smoothly, had a faint sweet taste and scent, and dried down to a matte finish really quickly. So far, so good!

The classic ‘kiss the back of your hand’ test (is that even a thing?) showed that there was only the slightest bit of transfer after the product dried to a matte finish on my lips.

My mid-morning snack proved to challenge the Lip Kit quite a bit. I’m not sure if the wet texture of the strawberries wore away the formula in the centre of my lips, but I was pretty unimpressed that the Lip Kit couldn’t even handle a light snack without fading. This didn’t give me faith for the rest of the day.

The chicken wrap that I ate for lunch made the majority of product on my bottom lip disappear. I was disappointed to notice that the liquid lipstick, even though I had applied the matching liner to my lips (just as Kylie recommends on the packaging), had bled over my lip line too.

I had to reapply the lipstick after my lunch. As the video shows, a second layer of Candy K applied smoothly over the top of the original. When I’ve used other matte lipsticks in the past such as the NARS Velvet Matte formula, they’ve lasted the majority of the day without a top up. I really wasn’t impressed with how easily the pigment moved around on the lips.

Turns out that layering the lip kit doesn’t result in a particularly pretty finish. My lips felt awful, they felt dry (yet weirdly sticky), and I really just wanted to remove the product.

I took off the Lip Kit just after 6pm. The lipstick didn’t perform well on me whatsoever. If you’re the kind of person who won’t eat or drink unless whatever you’re consuming is through a straw, this product is perfect for you. But, if you’re like me, and like to consume your foods in solid form, you’ll be disappointed with how the lipstick performs. My lips felt dry, and even though the product felt lightweight when first applied, as soon as you layered the lipstick it felt sticky and heavy.

I paid £30 for Candy K (even though I’ve heard rumours of people having to pay double that cost if they’re hit with customs), yet I believe I could have bought a better quality lipstick for a fraction of that price from the high street. If you’re after a good liquid lipstick in Kylie Jenner-y shades, I’d point you in the direction of MUA Velvet which is only £3…which is a tenth of the cost of the Kylie Lip Kit.

Sadly, the suspicion that I had about the Lip Kit has been confirmed – you really are just paying for the ‘Kylie Jenner’ name. I’m glad that I’ve actually given one of the lipsticks a go, but they really aren’t worth the hype, no matter how gorgeous the shades are. Now, if someone could point me in the direction of a dupe for True Brown K, I’d be very grateful.
