9 Things Your Make Up Artist Wishes You Knew

When you work as an MUA, it’s pretty much your job to be nice. You need to make your client look great and feel great – but what if you client is a bit of a dick? Makeup artist Cara Sawyer gave us the 411 on ‘getting your makeup done’ etiquette.

1: I am not a plastic surgeon

“I can do my best, but I cannot physically change your facial features. I can’t make you look just like your favourite celebrity, so stop asking me to.”

2: Makeup trends die for a reason

“Over drawing your lip line isn’t actually a good look.”

3: Social media makeup isn’t real

“Don’t show me an Instagram picture and say ‘this please’. Not only is it so much pressure on us, we all know it’s never gonna happen and probably won’t suit you because you have a different hair, skin, or eye colour.”

4:  Don’t try to do our job

“We do actually know what we are talking about, and as much as we value your opinion, we don’t get let loose on the public without extensive training. If you don’t like something thats fine and please let me know, but if I tell you something is wrong for your skin and suggest something else instead it’s because I’m pretty damn certain it’ll better for you.”

5: Stop plucking your brows

“Please just let the experts handle it! It makes it 10 times harder to give you that ‘Insta brow’ if I’ve got tadpoles to work with.”

6: Make sure your breath is fresh

“Please chew a mint before coming to see us. We are getting up close and personal with your face, please either stop talking or have a tic tac.”

7: Please believe our compliments

“When we say your makeup looks good, we really mean it! If you come in with winged liner that is sharper than a knife we will be impressed. It took us years to master that one and you do it daily like its no big deal!”

8: More makeup won’t cover your spots

“If you keep layering concealer and foundation over each other you are going to get nowhere, I promise you. Your face will be 10 times clearer, and thinner might I add, if you use one layer of water based foundation and good concealer.”

9: This is a Kardashian free zone

“For the love of God, do not mention Kim K or Kylie Jenner to a makeup artist. They look great in photos but if I applied that much makeup to your face you’d ask for your money back.”
